Enhancing Germination of Seeds of a Multipurpose Tree Species Combretum molle

Combretum molle R. Br. ex G. Don (Combretaceae) is a highly valued indigenous multipurpose tree species that has gained considerable attention in recent times due to its importance as medicinal plant well an alternative for wood and charcoal production. However, we lack adequate information on simple appropriate methods could be used break distinct seed dormancy support domestication of wild populations apparently undergoing over exploitation the negative impacts deforestation. Eight pre-treatment involving complete removal wing, mesocarp, overnight soaking cold water (24 °C) partial wing by scorching with fire, their combinations were tested against dormancy. Of all, mesocarp followed additional 24 h took shortest imbibition (2 days) germination (7 periods, highest value (76) energy (80%). Similarly, same treatment scored significantly (P < 0.05) higher cumulative 72%. To obtain best traits, C. seeds should pre-treated removing h, before sowing. These results have wide implications including supporting forest landscapes restoration Tanzania.
